Nothing like a beer ad to raise the profile of surveying and land boundaries. The rivalry between Victoria and South Australia runs beyond football to matters of boundaries and surveying.
The disputed state boundary between South Australia and Victoria lead the South Australian Government to take the Victorian Government to the High Court. The 1911 High Court decision was against South Australia which they then appealed in the Privy Council. The 1914 appeal decision was unsuccessful for South Australia too.
This was based on some key factors. 1) The surveyors who marked the boundary used the best available technology at the time, 2) the border survey was carried out in good faith and the work done paid half each by South Australia and Victoria and all agreed it had been done to an acceptable standard, and 3) and the boundary line from the time of survey has been treated as the boundary between the two states.
These principles applied by the courts still very much apply to boundaries today. Property boundaries are as good as the last survey that surveyed them.
Take the poll if you think West End Draught should remark the border. Personally I'll save South Australia further embarrassment and give it a miss and go for a Coopers Pale Ale and talk about the football.
